The Treatise

June 12, 2008

I finally am reading all the way through The Treatise on the Power and Primacy of the Pope in Concordia: the Lutheran Confessions. Such great stuff! I highly recommend going to this page to read it if you don’t have your own copy. It totally destroys the idea that Christ built His Church on Peter, when He really built it on Peter’s confession: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

How eye opening it was for me to read this!

However, as to the declaration: Upon this rock I will build My Church, certainly the Church has not been built upon the authority of man, but upon the ministry of the confession which Peter made, in which he proclaims that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. He accordingly addresses him as a minister: Upon this rock, i.e., upon this ministry. [Therefore he addresses him as a minister of this office in which this confession and doctrine is to be in operation and says: Upon this rock, i.e., this preaching and ministry.]

I was taught previously that the Church was built on the faith of St. Peter that was given to Him by the Father.

I’m glad it was helpful for you! There have been many aha moments for me as well, especially reading some of the quotes from the church fathers in it.
