Another quote from Pelikan

January 22, 2010

But it is a testimony to the continuing identity of the church’s Christian witness that the most severe denunciations and warnings regarding this situation continued to come from the spokesmen of the church.  The proof of the Spirit’s presence in the church is not that the church is pure, but that the church is willing to confess its impurity.

Unless I am greatly mistaken, this flies in the face of modern day Roman Catholic dogma.  As far as I understand it, Roman Catholics teach that the church is trustworthy and has the authority it has because it is pure.  (I may be overstating the case.)  But either way, it is an intriguing quote.
