Arvo Pärt

January 26, 2010

I absolutely love the music of Arvo Pärt.  His music is different from anything else I’ve ever heard and hard to describe.  So here are a couple videos with contrasting moods to give you a taste.

Here is his setting of “Bogoróditse Djévo” (Rejoice, O Virgin Theotokos):

And here is something completely different in character, a minute from his Passio Domine nostri Jesu Christo Secumdum Joannem (Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John).  It is well over an hour and it is fantastic!  I highly recommend the Hilliard Ensemble recording, which is the group here.  The entire piece is worth listening to, and the final 2 minutes will blow you away.

I will be adding “Passio” to my list of suggested Church Music Recordings.

  1. It’s really interesting music!

    • It absolutely is. It is the kind of stuff that takes you out of time and allows for contemplation.

    • …and the pieces I listed here are just scratching the surface. Look at my Church Music Recordings page for a few more.
